FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. ? Four former Duke women's soccer players -- Lorraine Quinn, Rebecca Moros, Allison Lipsher and Gwendolyn Oxenham -- will each suit up at the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) League East Coast combine in search to impress one of the newly formed professional teams from Dec. 18-21.
Invites to the invitation-only combines were made through a careful selection process done by the WPS Coaches Committee. In total, up to a maximum of 144 players will participate in the WPS Combines; no more than 72 at each location.
Combine participants include graduating college seniors who will have completed their eligibility following the conclusion of the 2008 season and other national and international talent from top level amateur leagues such as the W-League and WPSL.
Quinn just completed her eligibility this fall for the Blue Devils as she guided Duke to a first in Duke women's soccer -- back-to-back NCAA College Cup quarterfinal appearances. Quinn, a native of Farmingdale, N.Y., earned All-Region honors for the second straight year as a senior as she notched five goals, seven assists and 17 points for the Blue Devils.
Lipsher was one of the top goalkeepers in the ACC over her career as she finished with 33 shutouts over her four-year career from 2004-07. The 33 shutouts ranks second on Duke's career charts.
A four-year letterwinner from 2003-06, Moros earned third-team All-America accolades in 2006, while also being named All-ACC on three different occasions. She finished her career at Duke with 15 goals, 20 assists and 50 points.
Oxenham lettered with Duke from 2000-03 and notched Soccer Buzz All-Freshman and All-ACC accolades in 2000. She finished her career with 10 goals, 13 assists and 27 points.
During the combines, players will undergo general training and physical testing and will be assigned to specific teams with the opportunity to play in three games over the course of three days. Players' rights will be drafted by teams at the 2009 WPS Draft on January 16 in St. Louis at the NSCAA Convention. Beginning in February, teams will also hold local try-outs in their respective markets.
