Women?s Soccer Finishes No. 9 In NSCAA/adidas Rankings

DURHAM, N.C. ? The final NSCAA/adidas women's soccer national rankings have been released with Duke earning a No. 9 listing following its second straight quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA College Cup.
Head Coach Robbie Church and the Blue Devils had another stellar campaign in 2008 as Duke registered 15 victories, tied a school record with 13 shutouts and featured a school-best scoring combination of junior's KayAnne Gummersall and Elisabeth Redmond who notched a combined 27 goals and 10 game-winning tallies.
Headlining the national poll was National Champion North Carolina, while Notre Dame, UCLA, Stanford, Portland, Florida State, Texas A&M, USC, Duke and Florida rounded out the top 10. Boston College, Virginia, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Minnesota, San Diego, Missouri, Texas, James Madison and BYU were 11-20, while Rutgers, Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wake Forest closed out the top 25.
The final national ranking of No. 9 for the Blue Devils was the highest final listing for Duke since the NSCAA/adidas rankings started being kept in 1996.
As a team, Duke registered 155 points in 2008, which ranked as the fourth-most in school history, and 53 goals to rank tied for fourth on the Blue Devil single season charts. The 15 victories was also the third-most in school history and the most since the 1994 campaign when the Blue Devils collected 17 victories.
Duke will lose six seniors to graduation but return a solid nucleus in 2009 that includes leading scorers Gummersall and Redmond to go along the following starters -- defender Gretchen Miller, defender Ashley Rape, midfielder Jane Alukonis, forward Cody Newman and midfielder Marybeth Kreger. Also returning who started matches during the season are defender Meaghan FitzGerald, who started eight of the final 10 matches, and midfielder Kendall Bradley, who started six matches on the season. Overall, Duke returns 16 student-athletes who saw action on the field in 2008.
