DURHAM, N.C. ? The Michael W. Krzyzewski Center for Academic & Athletic Excellence received the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Southeast Region Award as the best project in a private sector over $15 million.
The $15.2 million Michael W. Krzyzewski Center provides the Duke basketball program and Duke athletics with one of the top facilities in the nation.
The Krzyzewski Center, which opened in February of 2008, is a first-class athletics complex designed to inspire, enhance and celebrate Duke University's extraordinary student-athletes. The three-story, 56,000-square-foot complex contains three vital components ? the department's academic support center, a premier campus banquet space and a basketball training facility.
“It's a great building. It's not a good one, it's a great building,” says the namesake, Mike Krzyzewski. “It's uplifting. Everybody ? the players, the coaching staff, the support staff ? when you walk into it, it makes you feel better.”
The academic support center features extensive computer resources, tutoring and counseling rooms and a team study space, while the banquet facility can host more than 300 people with additional room in the outdoor plaza, which is highlighted by quiet seating areas and beautifully landscaped terrain.
The basketball training area features two full-court practice areas, a world class weight and conditioning room, an alumni locker room and a state of the art theatre-style video room. There are also four baskets positioned around the sides of each court, giving the facility 12 total baskets.
“The facility is awesome,” said 2008 graduate DeMarcus Nelson. “It's going to be great for player development athletically and academically. It gives the players another place to work out and train when there's something else in Cameron. It's going to be a great thing for the program.”
The K Center is located next to Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Schwartz/Butters Athletic Center.
“I have been at Duke for 28 years and love everything this university stands for. It is a special place with special people,” Krzyzewski said. “I am extremely thankful to all of the people who have stepped forward to make this facility a reality. It will be a tremendous benefit to our university and athletic department in facilitating a well-rounded and exceptional educational process for more than 600 student-athletes annually. The Center for Excellence will be a part of my coaching career while I am at Duke, and to have my name associated with it forever means even more.”
