DURHAM, N.C. ? The NCAA College Cup Sweet 16 contest between 15th-ranked Duke and ninth-ranked Virginia has been set with the Blue Devils traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for a Saturday, Nov. 22 contest at 7:00 p.m.
It will mark the second time this year Duke (14-5-3) has made the trip to Virginia (14-4-3) as during the regular season the Blue Devils and Cavaliers battled to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes. In the contest, Virginia outshot Duke 22-6, which tied for the fewest shots taken in a game this season for the Blue Devils.
In the overall series, Virginia leads 12-10-6. The last time the two squads met in the NCAA College Cup was in 2004 in Charlottesville, Va., with Duke registering a 3-0 victory to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
TopDrawerSoccer.com also released its Team of the Season with three Blue Devils being honored -- junior KayAnne Gummersall, freshman Cody Newman and freshman Ashley Rape.
Gummersall, a forward who leads the Duke squad with 13 goals, is having the best season of her career with a team-best 30 points. A product of Wilmette, Ill, Gummersall has scored six of her 13 goals over the final eight games of the year. Gummersall was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Third Team of the Season.
Both Newman and Rape were each named to the second team All-Rookie Team. Rape, who started the first 15 games before suffering a torn ACL in practice, registered three goals and one assist, while helping the Duke defense to eight shutouts prior to her injury. Newman, a native of Bellerose, N.Y., has scored four goals and tallied four assists for 12 points on the year.
