WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.?The Duke University women's tennis team opened singles play in the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship at Wake Forest University today. Four Blue Devils advanced to the round of 32 after winning their opening matches and a doubles pair pushed through to the round of 16.
“I thought Reka [Zsilinszka] did a great job today,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “The girl she played was a really tough match for her playing style wise, but she came through it well. Jessi [Robinson] had a good match. It's always great to get a quick win especially when you have to start playing two matches a day.”
Third-seeded Ellah Nze breezed past Elizaveta Zaytseva of Winthrop, 6-4, 6-0 and the No. 4 seed Reka Zsilinszka dispatched Clemson's Ida Hadziselemovic 6-3, 7-5.
Jessi Robinson had no trouble with her opponent as she blanked Shannon Loughnan of Winston-Salem State 6-0, 6-0. Seeded ninth, Amanda Granson grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets victory over Lenka Hojckova from N.C. State. Melissa Mang rounded out the singles lineup with a tough 6-0, 6-1 loss to the No. 9 seed Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt.
In doubles action on the day, Granson and Zsilinszka edged UNC Charlotte's duo of Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshree Pillay, 8-6 to advance to the round of 16. The match was the first for the Blue Devil pair in their careers at Duke. The pair of Robinson and Nze fell to Jennifer Meredith and Natalie Pluskota of Tennessee, 8-4.
“I think we beat who we were supposed to beat and hopefully we'll get better tomorrow,” Ashworth said. “We've always played well at this tournament and hopefully they will build off the confidence of our success here in the past in the next few days.”
The Blue Devils start doubles play tomorrow, Oct. 25, at 8:30 a.m., at Wake Forest. The singles action will follow with those who advance playing two matches on the day.
