PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.?Five members of the Duke University women's tennis team were back in action today in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. The Blue Devils had three players in singles and a doubles pair in the main draw of the championship tournament.
Senior Melissa Mang and junior Amanda Granson started the day with a victory in the 16-team doubles draw. The third-ranked pair breezed past Stanford's Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, 8-2 to move on to the round of eight.
After advancing to the main draw with three wins in the qualifying rounds, junior Tara Iyer took on 14th-ranked Laura Vallverdu of Miami. Iyer battled hard, but fell to Vallverdu 6-3, 6-4.
Also playing singles for the Blue Devils were Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka. The No. 18 Nze dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to sixth-ranked Maria Mosolova of Northwestern. Heading into the tournament as the No. 17 player in the nation, Zsilinszka lost a tough three-set match to the Cardinal's Barte, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Mang and Granson will be back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m., at the Riviera Tennis Club. They will take on the sixth-ranked duo of Marritt Boonstra and Megan Alexander of Florida for a spot in the semifinal round.
