BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? The 17th-ranked Blue Devil women's tennis team opened its 2008 dual match campaign with a 6-1 win over 25th-ranked Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Devils are 1-0 on the season, while the Hoosiers fall to 2-1.
The Duke duo of senior Tory Zawacki and junior Jessi Robinson got things started for Duke, as the two combined for an 8-3 victory over Myriam Sopel and Brianna Williams at No. 3.
Freshman Reka Zsilinszka and sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin then defeated Lindsey Stuckey and Sigrid Fischer, 8-6, at the No. 2 slot to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Devils.
Junior Melissa Mang and sophomore Amanda Granson also posted a win, as the pair defeated Alba Berdala and Katya Zapadalova, 8-7 (8-6), at the top position.
Singles action saw Plotkin, ranked 57th in the country, pick up Duke's first win, as she defeated Charlotte Martin, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot to put Duke ahead, 2-0. No. 99 Granson then dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Williams at No. 6 as the Hoosiers got on the board.
Fifth-ranked Ellah Nze got Duke back on the winning track with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Berdala at the top spot to make the score 3-1, before Mang defeated Stuckey at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3) to clinch the victory.
No. 17 Zsilinszka picked up a win at No. 4, defeating Fischer in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) and sophomore Tara Iyer recorded a victory with a 7-5, 6-2, win over Zapadalova at No. 2 to put the final score at 6-1.
Duke will return to the courts on Feb. 2, as the Blue Devils host Iowa in their home opener. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
