With their 70-57 win at Florida State on Jan. 16 in Tallahassee, Fla., the No. 7/5 Duke Blue Devils improve to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC while the Seminoles fall to 12-6 and 1-2, respectively. Coach Mike Krzyzewski is now 25-5 all-time against Florida State.
With the victory, Duke now leads the series 26-6, including a 11-5 mark at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The win breaks a two game losing streak in the series and stops a streak of the Seminoles winning three of the last five in Tallahassee.
The Blue Devils played in their first true road test of the season Wednesday and are now 3-0 on the road this season after having road contests in a pair of NBA arenas at Davidson (Charlotte Bobcats Arena) and Temple (Wachovia Center).
Duke is now 20-7 under Coach K in ACC road openers, including 9-2 in the last 11 games. Overall on the road, Duke is 60-21 in its last 81 road ACC Contests.
Duke is 188-54 in the month of January under Coach K. Duke has won nine straight and 82 of the last 89 in January.
Duke held the Seminoles to just 3-of-13 (.231) from behind the arc. Duke ranks second the ACC in three-point defense, holding opponents to just 30.1 percent on the season (74-of-246). In two ACC games, Duke is holding opponents to 7-of-27 (.259) from behind the arc.
Duke's bench outscored Florida State's 33-10, including 26-8 in the first half. Duke was just about on its average of 31.5 points per game off the bench. With Jon Scheyer scoring 21 points off the bench, Duke has had a total of 20 double figure performances off the bench this season and four 20-point performances.
Florida State led twice in the game. The first time was when they went up 5-4 early in the contest and they held that lead for 8 seconds before Taylor King hit a three-pointer. They also led 55-54 at the 3:46 mark and held that lead for 16 seconds when Kyle Singler hit a three ball. Duke outscored Florida State 16-2 to end the game after the Seminoles second lead of the contest.
In the final 16-2 run for the Blue Devils, they connected on 9-of-10 from the line, including each of the last eight, in the final 1:34 of the game.
Duke's 13 point margin of victory, while under its season average of 22.0 headed into the contest, is impressive nonetheless. Twelve of Duke's 14 wins this season have been by double figures.
With a 34-22 lead at the half, Duke has now lead at the half in all 15 games this season and now has a 16.7 per game average margin of lead at the break. It is the 12th time in 15 games that Duke's lead has been double digits at the half, as well.
Duke held Florida State to 22-of-62 from the field, for a 35.5 percentage. Duke has held all 15 of its opponents under 50 percent from the field and has done so in 16 straight games now. Duke is 610-80 under Coach K holding its opponents to less than 50 percent and Duke is also 277-9 under Coach K, including 7-1 this season, holding opponent s to less than 40 percent from the field.
Duke forced Florida State into 14 turnovers while only allowing seven assists. It's the 13th time in 15 games that Duke opponent have had fewer assists than turnovers and it's the eighth time this season that Duke's opponents have racked up twice as many or more assists against turnovers.
With seven points and six assists, senior DeMarcus Nelson became just the sixth player under 6-5 to record 500 career rebounds. He is just the second player under Coach K do accomplish that feat (Johnny Dawkins, 1983-86 ? 536). The top four players on that list all played prior to 1965 and all were considered forwards and not guards. Nelson now has 502 career rebounds.
Nelson also becomes the 10th player in Duke history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 150 assists and 100 steals in a season. Mike Dunleavy was the last player to accomplish that feat.
With 1,047 career points, Nelson remains in 50th place in Duke history. He is 10 points behind Kenny Dennard for 49th place.
Junior Greg Paulus struggled shooting in the game, missing his first five three-point attempts, but he saved his best for last. With Duke up 58-55 with 2:32 remaining, Paulus got a steal and lay-up to push the lead to five points. He then hit another lay-up to put Duke up 64-57 with 44 seconds left and with 30 seconds left, he got a steal and in the ensuing scuffle he was fouled and hit both free throws to put Duke up 66-57.
Jon Scheyer came off the bench to lead Duke in scoring with 21 points. He hit 9-of-13 from the field, 2-of-5 from behind the arc, and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 32 minutes. It marks Scheyer's second 20-point game this season and fifth of his career. He also has 10 games in double figures this season and 33 in his career.
With Scheyer getting his second 20-point performance of the season, a total of five Blue Devils now have multiple 20-point games in the first 15 games of the season. Nelson leads the way with three, following by Scheyer, Taylor King, Kyle Singler and Gerald Henderson. This season marks the ninth in school history where five players have recorded multiple 20-point performances. The other seasons were 1960-61, 1968-69, 1989-90, 1991-92, 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04.
Duke has now played in front of a sold out crowed in 219 of its last 256 games.

With 789 career wins in his first 33 seasons, Coach K is currently second on the NCAA's list of most victories in a coaches' first 33 season. He trails Dean Smith, who had 802 wins through 33 seasons.
