With their 87-65 victory over Virginia on Jan. 13 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the No. 9/7 Duke Blue Devils improve to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while the Cavaliers fall to 10-4 and 0-1, respectively.
Duke now leads the series 108-48, including 44-16 under coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils have won 11 of the last 12 in the series. At Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke is 46-8 vs. the Cavaliers, including 12 straight dating back to a 91-88 double overtime loss on Jan. 14, 1995.
Duke is now 40-15 all-time in ACC openers, including 21-7 in under Coach K. Duke has won 21 of its last 25 league openers, including 11 of its last 12.
Duke held Virginia to just 4-of-14 (.286) from behind the arc. The Cavaliers were leading the ACC in three-pointers made (9.69 per game) and were third in three-point field goal percentage (.405) headed into the game. Duke was on par with its three-point percentage defense, ranking second in the ACC holding opponents to 30.6 percent on the season.
Duke connected on 11-of-31 (.355) from behind the arc, marking the seventh time this season Duke has hit 10 or more threes. Duke has hit 10 or more from behind the arc 146 times in its history and is now 117-29 in those games, including 7-0 this season.
Duke's bench recorded 27 points on the evening, slightly under its ACC-leading average of 31.5 ppg. With Jon Scheyer scoring 12 points off the bench, Duke has had a total of 19 double figure performances off the bench this season.
Duke's 22-point margin of victory is on par with its ACC-leading average of 22.0, a mark that's also good for second best in the NCAA this season.
Duke shot 34-of-67 from the field (.504), marking the sixth time this season that Duke has hit on over 50.0 percent of its field goals. Duke is 408-30 under Coach K when hitting on 50.0 percent or higher from the field, including 6-0 this year and 18 straight dating back to an 87-84 loss at Georgetown on Jan. 21, 2005.
Conversely, Duke held the Cavaliers to 25-of-59 from the field (.424), marking the 15th straight game (including all 14 this season) in which Duke has held its opponent to less than 50.0 percent from the field. Duke is 609-80 under Coach K holding teams to under 50.0 percent.
Duke recorded 21 assists to just 12 turnovers, including 12 assists and just two turnovers in the second half, marking the eighth time this season Duke has had more assists than turnovers. Duke's 21 assists is the second-highest total of the season and marks the third time over 20 assists in a game. Duke's plus nine on assists to turnovers is the third-highest total of the season.
Duke forced 19 turnovers while holding the Cavaliers to just nine assists, marking the sixth straight game and the 12th time in 14 games this season Duke's opponent has had more turnovers than assists. It's also the seventh time this season Duke's opponent has had twice as many turnovers as assists.
Duke has now sold out 266 consecutive games at Cameron Indoor Stadium dating back to Nov. 16, 1990, against Boston College. Overall, Duke has played in front of a sell out in 218 of its last 255 games.
Senior DeMarcus Nelson scored 20 points, hitting on 8-of-12 from the field, 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and 1-of-2 from the line. He added four rebounds and three assists along with a steal in 29 minutes.
Nelson has now scored 20 or more in three straight home games.
Nelson now has 1,040 career points and moved past Chip Engelland (1980-83 ? 1,025), Ricky Price (1995-98 ? 1,026) and Rudy D'Emilio (1952-54 ? 1,028) and into 50th place on Duke's career chart. Immediately ahead is Kenny Dennard, who scored 1,057 from 1978-81.
With Nelson's 20-point performance, Duke has now had a 20-point scorer in each of the last four conference openers. Nelson scored 22 against Virginia Tech last year while Shelden Williams scored 21 against the Hokies on Dec. 4, 2005, and J.J. Redick scored 24 against Clemson on Jan. 2, 2005.
Nelson's 20 points also push his career scoring average to 10.0 points per game (1,040 points in 104 games). If he can maintain that average, he will become the 59th player in Duke history to play in 50 or more games and average double figures in scoring.
Nelson now has three 20-point games this season and six in his career. He also has 12 games scoring in double figures this season and 55 such career games.
Gerald Henderson scored 18 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, and added a pair of assists and pair of steals for the Blue Devils. It marks his 11th game scoring in double figures this season and 18th in his career.
Kyle Singler scored 13 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field, and added six rebounds and a pair of assists to his performance. He has scored in double figures in nine games this season.
Scheyer's 12-point performance gives him nine games in double figures this season and 32 in his career.
Greg Paulus scored nine points hitting on 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and he added four assist to just one turnover. On the season, he has 52 assists to 25 turnovers while in the last three games he has 12 assists against just three turnovers.
