ANN ARBOR, MICH. ? The No. 17 Duke women's tennis team dominated the competition on day one of the Michigan Invitational on Friday, as the Blue Devils were victorious in all nine singles contests and all three doubles matches played.
To begin the 2008 campaign, Duke took on Miami (Ohio) and Michigan State in singles action. Freshman Ellah Nze played at the No. 1 spot for the Blue Devils and came away with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brintney Larson of Miami (Ohio), while sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin defeated Megan Martzolf of Miami (Ohio), 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2.
Freshman Reka Zsilinszka brought home a win at No. 3 as she defeated Cara Wald of Miami (Ohio), 6-2, 6-2, while junior Melissa Mang defeated Michigan State's Michelle Murphy, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 slot and sophomore Amanda Granson posted a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Marianne Eelens of Michigan State at No. 5.
Senior Tory Zawacki defeated Sydnee Bridger of Miami (Ohio), 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 6 position, while junior Jessi Robinson defeated Christine Milliken of Michigan State, 6-2, 6-1, in flight No.7 competition.
Mang also posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Michigan's Rika Tatsuno and Granson picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kari Wig of Michigan at flights six and seven, respectively, when competing with Denver.
In doubles action, Zawacki combined with sophomore Tara Iyer to post an 8-6 triumph over Tania Mahtani and Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan at No. 1.
Facing duos from No. 47 Denver in the other two doubles contests, Nze and Plotkin defeated Julia Bauregger and Mallory Voelker, 8-6, at No. 1, while Robinson and Zsilinszka recorded a 9-7 victory over Kyla Iwinski and Ute Schnoy at No. 2.
The Blue Devils will return to action at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., as they take on Miami (Ohio)/Michigan State in doubles. Following doubles play, Duke will face Michigan in singles competition.
