FRANKLIN, TENN. ? The 2007-08 women's golf season officially started on Friday afternoon for the top-ranked and three-time defending NCAA Champion Duke as the Blue Devils shot a four-under-par, 284, and sit in fourth place after 18 holes at the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship in Nashville, Tenn.
Arizona State leads all teams after turning in a tournament-record eight-under-par, 280, followed by UCLA (281), Arizona (283), Duke (284), Florida (285) and Auburn (288) at the 6,217-yard, Par 72 Ironhorse Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
“We are with a different lineup obviously with Jennie Lee out of the lineup,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “I feel really good about some of the rounds and some of the golf I saw out there today. I am really happy for Rebecca Kim as she was actually three-under-par at one point and was under par for most of the day.”
Blue Devil junior Amanda Blumenherst is in second place in the individual action, after carding a bogey-free six-under-par, 66, on Friday. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst registered birdies on four straight holes during the front nine on her way to carding a front nine 32. On the back she notched birdies on No. 11 and No. 18 to collect the third-best score of the two-time NCAA Player of the Year's career.
Leading the indivdual play is UCLA's Tiffany Joh after posting a seven-under-par, 65.
Both senior Jennifer Pandolfi and freshman Kim Donovan each fired even-par rounds of 72 on day one for the Blue Devils. Pandolfi, who is from Navarre, Fla., totaled three birdies and one bogey on the front nine on her way to posting a 34 on the first nine holes. The three-time All-ACC selection suffered bogies on No. 10, No. 11 and No. 17 before turning in a birdie on the 18th to close at even par.
A product of Hopkinton, Mass., Donovan opened her collegiate career with a bogey on the first and sixth holes, but settled down after that as she birdied the par five seventh. Donovan then rang up six straight pars before notching birdies on No. 14 and No. 17 to move to one-under-par. She closed the 18th hole with a bogey to finish with a 72. Both Donovan and Pandolfi are tied for 24th overall.
“That is fantastic,” commented Brooks on Donovan's play. “To have that be your first collegiate round you can only be happy about that.”
Sophomore Rebecca Kim had one of the best starts of the day for the Blue Devils as she birdied No. 2, No. 3 and No. 7 to move to three-under-par, but a bogey on the ninth gave Kim a 34 on the front nine. A native of Tigard, Ore., Kim bogied No. 10 and came back to birdie the par four 11th to move back to two-under-par. Kim totaled a bogey and three pars over the next four holes before having a wild last three holes.
On the par-three 16th, Kim had a double-bogey followed by a birdie on the par-four 17th and a double-bogey on the par-five 18th to close with a 74. She is tied for 49th in the overall individual action.
“I am very excited about Rebecca's play,” said Brooks. “She is looking a lot more comfortable out on the golf course and it appears she is able to focus better. I couldn't be happier about that.”
Sophomore Alison Whitaker struggled on the day with a five-over-par 77 and is tied for 67th. Duke will tee off beginning at 9:45 a.m. (EST) along with Auburn and Vanderbilt. Fans can follow the action live on www.golfstat.com.
