BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Tory Zawacki and junior Melissa Mang combined for an 8-2 victory on Tuesday to take the doubles title at the 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships, hosted by Indiana University.
The Blue Devil duo squared off against Taylor Marable and Rebecca Parks (Princeton) for the title, and recorded a commanding 8-2 win to become the first in program history to win an ITA Summer Championship.
“It was a great tournament with a lot of good players,” said Mang. “We played really well. Tory and I haven't played that much together so it was really fun to win this tournament.”
Mang and Zawacki defeated Meritt Emery and Paulina Bigos (Alabama), 8-4, before posting an 8-3 victory over Christine Bader and Lindsey Lonergan (Michigan State) in the round of 16. The quarterfinals pitted the duo against Chisako Sugiyama and Whitney Taney (Michigan), as Mang and Zawacki came away with an 8-2 win to advance to the semifinals. The Blue Devil duo met the top-seeded tandem of Keri Robinson and Lauren Lui (Northwestern) and recorded an exciting win, posting a tight 9-8 (4) victory to earn a spot in the championship match.
“I think what helped us win this tournament was the confidence we had in ourselves and in each other,” said Zawacki. “Especially in the match against the Northwestern team - that was the hardest match of the tournament - I really think what carried us was our confidence.”
The singles and doubles champions from the ITA National Summer Championships earn wild cards into the first national tournaments of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season - the Polo Ralph Lauren Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in October.
The ITA National Summer Championships presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which was played at 23 regional sites throughout the country last month.
