DURHAM, N.C. - Former Blue Devil tennis standout Kelly McCain has been named women's tennis assistant coach, as was announced on Wednesday by Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth.
Following a stellar two-year playing career as a Blue Devil, the Tampa, Fla., native enjoyed a two-year professional career, having played in tournaments across the globe, including the all four majors. McCain owns a career-high ranking of 117 in the world and has captured four professional titles on the ITF Tour - three in singles and one in doubles.
“I am very excited to work with the team and with Coach Ashworth and to start a new year as a coach instead of a player,” said McCain. “It should be really fun and exciting, and I'm looking forward to it.”
At Duke, McCain garnered All-America honors in 2002 and 2003 and was an All-ACC selection in each of those years. She became Duke's fifth ACC Rookie of the Year in 2002 and was selected as ACC Player of the Year in 2003. McCain guided the Blue Devils to conference championship and regular season titles in 2003, the 2002 regular season title and Duke's first National Team Indoor championship in 2003.
After a two-year stint in the professional tennis ranks, McCain returned to Duke in 2005-06 to finish her undergraduate degree and served as an undergraduate assistant coach with the Blue Devil tennis team during that time. She finished her degree in May of 2007and has served as the head instructor at the Precision Tennis Academy in Greensboro, N.C., since her return to school.
“I'm excited about having Kelly on our staff, as are the girls on the team,” said Ashworth. “She was part of a top-ranked team when she was here at Duke, she was the number one player in the country at that time and she played at the top singles spot for us when we won the program's first National Team Indoor title. I know that she is excited to bring that back to our program.”
McCain replaces two-year assistant coach Stephanie Nickitas, following Nickitas' hiring as women's tennis head coach at the University of Central Florida.
