DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore golfer Amanda Blumenherst and senior field hockey player Amy Stopford have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III first team, and senior lacrosse player Kristen Waagbo received second team honors, as was announced by CoSIDA on Thursday.
As first team picks, Blumenherst and Stopford will advance to the national ballot.
Blumenherst, who is currently the top-ranked golfer in the nation and on pace to win her second straight National Player of the Year honor, currently sits tied for third, individually, in the NCAA Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst has won four tournaments this season and owns the best stroke average in the nation, 71.08, to go along with five top five and eight top 10 finishes. The sophomore was named ACC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and owns a 3.78 grade point average. A History major, Blumenherst won the Edith Cummings Golf Award in 2006 as the top All-America with the highest grade point average. Over her short two-year career she has won seven tournaments which ranks tied for second on Duke's all-time charts.
Stopford started 85 of 88 games played in four years at Duke and finished her career with 37 goals and 18 assists for 92 points. In 2006, she netted 12 goals, second-most on the team, and received STX/NFHCA first team All-America honors and ACC All-Tournament accolades. The Hillsborough, N.C., native became the second Honda-Sports Award nominee in Duke field hockey history in 2006 and was selected as a NFHCA Senior All-Star. Stopford is a three-time All-South Region selection, a two-time All-ACC pick and ACC All-Academic Field Hockey team member, and a four-time NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad member. An Earth and Ocean Sciences major, Stopford holds a GPA of 3.70.
Waagbo added more hardware to her collection by being named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District second team. She earned her degree in cultural anthropology with a certificate in markets and management studies. To be eligible for the award, candidates must have a 3.2 GPA or better and be a significant contributor to their team on the field. Duke is a part of District III, which encompasses the southern Atlantic states.
