DURHAM, N.C. - The 16th-ranked Duke men's tennis team defeated 55th-ranked Maryland, 7-0, on Saturday evening at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils end their home slate with a 9-1 record on their owncourts, having won their last two contests at home by way of 7-0 shutouts.
With the win, Duke improves to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in ACC play, while Maryland falls to 10-7 (2-6 ACC). The Terrapins have lost five straight matches. Duke controls the all-time series with Maryland, 42-18.
Duke took the doubles point on the strength of wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights, as the fifth-ranked duo of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet defeated Scott Fink and Nicolas Frayssinoux, 8-3, and senior Peter Rodrigues and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov defeated Boris Fetbroyt and Andrew Orban, 8-5, respectively.
At No. 2, junior Ned Samuelson and freshman Dylan Arnould fell to Nickolai Nielson and Louis-Xavier Lavalee, 8-5.
Singles competition saw the Blue Devils dominate, taking each first set, and winning four of six matches in straight sets.
Goulet posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fetbroyt at the No. 5 spot and 69th-ranked Atas defeated Orban, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2 before Arnould defeated Fink, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 4 position to clinch the victory for Duke.
Rodrigues, ranked 115th in the country, secured his 99th career singles victory versus the Terrapins as he defeated Nielson, 6-1, 6-3, at flight No. 3. His 99 career singles wins ranks 10th all-time at Duke.
At No. 6, junior Alex Stone defeated Aaron Carr, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 in the super tiebreaker, and at No. 1, 48th-ranked Dimitrov posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Frayssinoux.
“It was great to get two wins this weekend before hitting the road to end the regular season,” said Duke head coach Jay Lapidus. “This should give us some good momentum going into the final week before the ACC Tournament.”
The Blue Devils will hit the road for three straight contests to end the regular season with matches at North Carolina (April 11- 3 p.m.), Virginia (April 13, 3 p.m.) and Virginia Tech (April 15- 2 p.m.).
