ATLANTA, GA.? Duke University guard Lindsey Harding was named the 2007 Naismith Trophy Women's College Player of the Year presented by AT&T, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Harding accepted the trophy at the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) luncheon in Cleveland, Oh., site of the of the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four.
The Player of the Year of the Atlantic Coast Conference, ACC defender of the year and winner of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the best player 5-8 and under in the country was presented with the trophy by Atlanta Tipoff Club Chairman Jim Williams and AT&T Senior Vice President for Architecture and Planning Kris Rinne.
The Naismith Trophy is given annually to the men's and women's college players of the year and is the most prestigious national award in college basketball. The other Naismith Trophy finalists were Jessica Davenport (Ohio State), Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) and Candace Parker (Tennessee). Harding also will be honored at the Naismith Awards banquet April 5 in Atlanta.
Harding led Duke to a 29-0 record in the regular season becoming the 14th team in NCAA history to go undefeated, and was named ACC Player & Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-ACC, ACC Player of the Week twice and Blue Sky Classic MVP. She averaged 14.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game and notched six games with 20+ points. Harding became only the sixth ACC player to register 1,000 pts., 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 250 steals in a career.
The 5-8 senior was selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's board of selectors ? a collection of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country ? and the fans. Through AT&T's wireless text messaging, fans accounted for an unprecedented 25% of the board of selectors' overall vote. The results were certified by the accounting firm of Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP.
“On a team as talented as Duke, it takes a special player to rise up and lead the group and Lindsey has done that throughout her entire career,” said Gary Stokan, Atlanta Tipoff Club president. “She is a well-deserving recipient of the Naismith Trophy.”
