DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 21-ranked Duke women's tennis team improved to 5-2 (2-0 ACC) on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win over 49th-ranked Virginia at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Doubles action saw the Duke duo of sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin post an 8-3 victory over Jennifer Stevens and Caroline Hammond at the No. 2 spot, before the 36th-ranked tandem of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang defeated Maggie Yahner and Brintney Larson, 8-2, at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Devils.
Bercek and Mang, who debuted at No. 36 in the national doubles rankings on March 6, improved to 6-0 on the season with the win, a record that includes a 5-0 mark at the No. 1 position and a 2-0 mark versus ranked opponents.
At No. 3 doubles, junior Tory Zawacki and senior Kristin Cargill fell to Amanda Rales and Lindsey Periera, 8-3.
Duke won three straight singles matches to take the victory and then won two of the remaining three matches to put the final score at 6-1 in favor of the Blue Devils.
Bercek defeated Stevens, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 slot, and 108th-ranked Mang defeated Larson, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2, before freshman Amanda Granson came through with the clinching victory at the No. 4 position, posting a 6-4, 6-0 win over Pereira.
Mang's victory was her sixth in a row, as her dual match record now stands at 6-1. That record includes a 5-0 mark at the No. 2 singles slot and a 2-0 mark versus nationally ranked opponents.
Zawacki defeated Hammond in a tough three-set battle, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, at the No. 5 position to give Duke its fifth point, and 99th-ranked Plotkin recorded a 6-4, 7-5 win over Yahner at No. 3 for the sixth point.
Virginia got on the board after Rales defeated senior Clelia Deltour, 7-6, 7-5, at No. 6 in the last match of the day.
“This was a really good win for us, especially in that it was against a ranked ACC team,” said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. “I thought that our girls were able to come through in close points and that everyone fought hard to the end of their matches. Hopefully we'll carry the momentum from today's win into our three matches in California.”
Duke will travel to San Diego, Calif., next week, and the Blue Devils will face three top-50 teams in four days - No. 16 Tennessee (March 14), No. 2 Notre Dame (March 15) and No. 50 Princeton (March 17).
