No. 11 Duke Falls To No. 10 Baylor, 4-0, At National Team Indoors

CHICAGO, ILL. - The No. 11 Duke men's tennis team fell to No. 10 Baylor, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2007 USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship on Friday evening at the Midtown Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill. The Blue Devils fall to 3-3 on the season with the loss.
The fourth-ranked doubles tandem of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet got things started for the Blue Devils with an 8-5 victory over 44th-ranked Matt Brown and David Galic at the No. 1 spot.
Baylor then bounced back to win at spots two and three, to head into singles competition with a 1-0 advantage, as junior Ned Samuelson and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov fell to Lars Poerschke and Matija Zgaga (8-6) and senior Peter Rodrigues and freshman Dylan Arnould fell to Michal Kokta and Dominik Mueller (9-8 (7-3)).
Singles competition saw even matchups across the board, as Duke came out on top in four of six first sets. Baylor, however, took control in second-set action and went on to post three straight singles victories for the win.
At the No. 6 slot, freshman Aaron Carpenter fell to 66th-ranked Denes Lukacs (6-2, 6-4), as the Bears went up 2-0. At No. 1, 100th-ranked Joey Atas defeated 17th-ranked Michal Kokta, 6-3, in the first set, but Kokta came back to post a 6-3 win in the second set and a 6-4 win in the third to put Baylor up 3-0.
At No. 5, 53rd-ranked Dominik Mueller defeated 84th-ranked Arnould in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) to clinch the 4-0 victory for Baylor.
Duke will return home for its next match on March 7 when the Blue Devils host in-state foe Elon at 2 p.m. at Ambler Stadium.
