DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 11 Duke women's tennis team defeated unranked Yale, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils improved to 2-1, as they handed the Bulldogs (1-4) their second straight loss.
Duke swept the doubles point and went into singles play up 1-0. Senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang improved to 2-0 on the season with a commanding 8-2 victory over Christine Alford and Janet Kim at the No. 1 spot, before freshman Amanda Granson and senior Kristin Cargill teamed up for an 8-5 win over Sarah Lederhandler and Jessica Rhee at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Devils.
The duo of senior Parker Goyer and sophomore Jessi Robinson also came away victorious, defeating Christina Cutter and Lindsey Dashiell, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.
Singles action saw Duke win five of six singles matches for the second consecutive match. Granson started things off for the Blue Devils, posting a two-set victory over Rhee (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 3 slot, and senior Clelia Deltour posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Olivia Nix at No. 5 before Cargill clinched the victory for Duke with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lilian Nguyen at the No. 6 position.
Robinson then fell to Alford at the No. 4 slot (6-2, 4-6 (10-8)) and Bercek defeated Kim, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 to put the final score at 6-1 in Duke's favor.
“It was great to play some matches after being off for two weeks,” said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. “We needed to get some matches against outside people and we have to work on our doubles play heading into ACC action next weekend, but overall I thought we played pretty well this weekend, especially after being off for a while.”
Duke remains at home for its next match, as the Blue Devils open ACC play versus No. 66 Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. on Feb. 17.
