KISSIMMEE, FLA.? The top-seeded Duke Women's Golf Team advanced to the second round of the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Collegiate Match Play Championship where play was suspended due to darkness as the Ginn Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. Duke leads three of five matches in the second round against ninth-seeded Oklahoma State in the second round.
In the first matches of the day, Duke cruised to a 4-1 victory over 16th-seed TCU. Junior Jennie Lee got things rolling for the Blue Devils as she never trailed against Allyson Ferguson. A product of Henderson, Nev., Lee won the first two holes and never looked back. She closed the match on the 13th hole with a 6 & 5 victory.
Also notching wins in the morning were Amanda Blumenherst with a 1 up tally over Valentine Derrey, Jennifer Pandolfi with a 1 up victory over Melissa Loh and Alison Whitaker with a 4 & 3 win against Megan O'Donnell. TCU's Prisella Campbell never trailed against Duke's Rebecca Kim winning 5 & 3 in the other match.
Oklahoma State got off to an excellent start in the second round taking the lead in all five matches but the Blue Devils were making a comeback when play was suspended. Blumenherst was down two to Pernilla Lindberg through the first 12 holes before getting the match all square on her 14th hole and taking a 1 up lead on the 15th. The match was suspended after No. 15.
Lee was down by as many as three holes through six played, but on the 11th hole she got the match back to all square against Karin Kinnerud. Kinnerud won the next hole but Lee came back to win the 13th and 14th holes to take a 1 up advantage when play was stopped.
Pandolfi, a senior from Navarre, Fla., was 2 down through 10 holes versus Amanda Johnson but came back to win the 11th, 12th and 14th holes to take a 1 up lead before the action was suspended. Whitaker lost the first hole and was 1 down through nine holes against Sarah Bradley. Whitaker won the 10th and 11th holes to take a 1 up lead and held a 1 up advantage with five holes remaining. Bradley won the 14th hole to get the match all square where it remained with three left.
In the other match, Oklahoma State's Tammy Clelland was winning 4 up with four holes left against Duke's Kim Donovan.
Play will resume at 7:30 a.m., on Monday morning and then the team advancing to the third round will start play at 9:30 a.m.
