DURHAM, N.C. ? The California Golden Bears defeated the Liberty Lady Flames 3-1 (30-20, 26-30, 30-15, 30-21) Friday night here at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the first round of the 2007 Division I NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament. With the win, Cal improves to 23-7 on the season while Libery ends its season at 27-9.
Hana Cutura led the way for the Golden Bears, with 21 kills while hitting an impressive .360. Angie Pressey added 14 kills and 13 digs while Carli Lloyd did an impressive job setting with 48 assists, nine digs and six blocks while also hitting .625 with five kills. Ellen Orchard also reached double figures with 11 kills while hitting .529 and added six digs. As a team, Cal hit .344 to Liberty's .105 and the Golden Bears out-blocked the Lady Flames 16-6, as well.
Liberty was led by Nicki Scripko who had 18 kills, eight digs and seven assists, while Kallie Corbin had 40 assists and 12 digs and Karyl Bacon had a match-high 19 digs.
Liberty did show life in the second game, winning 30-26 with an impressive crowd on hand cheering them on. They outhit Cal .310 to .152 in that game. The other three games, however, Cal hit at over a .400 clip in all but the last game, when they hit .395.
Cal now advances to the second round, which will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. ET at Cameron Indoor Stadium. They will face the winner of the second match Friday between host Duke and American.
