DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke University recently hired former men's basketball player Chris Carrawell as its new Athletics Outreach Coordinator. Carrawell will organize and carry out all aspects of the Verizon Read with the Blue Devils program, keep track of all of Duke athletics' community service hours and activities, assist coaches and teams in implementing community service initiatives, communicate the community service efforts to other departments in athletics and accompany student-athletes to major service events.
“It feels good to come back home to family,” said Carrawell. “This is a great opportunity to work with the Duke community and work with people on the professional level that I have known since I was 18. This is a special opportunity and I am looking forward to the experience.”
Carrawell, the 2000 ACC Player of the Year and a first team All-America selection, was a member of the Duke men's basketball program from 1996-2000. He was also a two-time All-ACC selection in his career with the Blue Devils. He finished tied for 27th on the all-time scoring list at Duke with 1,455 career points and also ranks 10th in school history with 0.8 blocks per game and tied for sixth with 116 overall wins. Carrawell helped the Blue Devils dominate the ACC during his tenure finishing his career with 66 conference victories, second most all-time by a Duke player.
During his playing days with the Blue Devils, Carrawell was also active in the community participating in the Verizon Read with the Blue Devils program as well as making visits to the Duke Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.
Carrawell, a second round draft pick by the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, has played overseas since graduating from Duke. Most recently he played in Holland where his team finished second after losing in the championship finals. For the past two years, Carrawell and former teammate Nate James have hosted a summer basketball camp for Durham area kids ages 6-17.
