With their 82-58 win over No. 20 Wisconsin on Nov. 27, 2007 in the ninth annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the No. 7 Duke Blue Devils improve to 7-0 on the season while the Badgers fall to 5-1. Today was the first meeting between these two teams and Duke is also now 59-23 all-time against teams from the Big Ten Conference, including 2-0 this season (also defeating Illinois 79-66 in the Maui Invitational).
Duke is now a perfect 9-0 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the only team in either conference that is undefeated in the event. Duke is now 3-0 all-time at home in the Challenge, 2-0 in road games and 4-0 in neutral court match-ups.
Duke is now 7-0 for the third time in the last four years and for the 15th time in 28 seasons under Coach K.
Duke has now won 55 straight non-conference home games, the longest streak in the NCAA. Duke last lost at home to a non-ACC opponent on Feb. 26, 2000, an 83-82 decision against St. John's. In that span, Duke has now defeated four ranked teams, counting the Badgers.
Duke has now defeated two consecutive ranked teams, also topping No. 10 Marquette, 77-73 in the final of the Maui Invitational. Duke is now 238-239 all-time against ranked teams (AP poll) and improves to 9-8 over the No. 20 ranked team in the AP poll. Conversely, Duke is now 887-226 all-time as a ranked team, including 54-17 as the No. 7 team. Duke is also 754-169 as a Top 10 team in the AP poll.
Duke hit 11-of-24 from behind the arc, the second straight game Duke has hit 10-plus three-pointers and the Blue Devils have accomplished that feat three times this season. In 2006-07, Duke did not reach double figures as a team in three-pointers made. All-time, Duke has hit 10 or more three-pointers in a game 142 times and is now 113-29 in those games.
Senior DeMarcus Nelson scored nine points, added seven rebounds and a career-high seven assists. He also had three steals and two blocks in 34 minutes of action.
Nelson became the second guard in Duke history (Quin Snyder) to record multiple points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in the same game more than once. Nelson also accomplished the feat against Columbia on Nov. 12, 2006. All-time, it marks the 121st time from 38 players this has happened.
Nelson also becomes the 22nd player to record seven or more points, rebounds and assists in the same game. Those 22 players have accomplished that feat 58 times.
Sophomore Jon Scheyer scored 10 points and recorded a career-high nine rebounds (old career high was seven, three times). He added a pair of assists and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Scheyer now has four games this season and 27 in his career scoring in double figures.
Freshman Taylor King scored 15 points while shooting 5-of-9 from behind the arc and added 5 rebounds and 2 steals, as well. In four games at home this season, King is Duke's leading scorer averaging 17.3 points per game while hitting 23-of-41 from the field and 18-of-33 from behind the arc. King has now scored in double figures in three games this season. King now has three games this season with five or more three-pointers, more than any freshman in Duke history other than J.J. Redick, who had six such games as a freshman.
Junior Greg Paulus scored 18 points while shooting 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Paulus' four triples was just one off his career high. He now has 34 career games scoring in double figures, including two this year.
Freshman Kyle Singler scored 13 points while shooting 4-of-7 from the field, 2-of-4 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He added 6 rebounds in 31 minutes. It marks his fifth game in double figures in seven career games.
Sophomore Gerald Henderson scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds against Wisconsin, marking the sixth game this season and 13th in his career in which he's scored in double figures.
Duke has now sold out 262 consecutive games at Cameron Indoor Stadium dating back to Nov. 16, 1990.
