Duke is now 1-0 vs. New Mexico State after playing an opponent for the first time in both games this season. Duke is now 4-0 against teams currently making up the Western Athletic Conference with the other wins coming over Hawai'i in 1989, Fresno State in 1998 and San Jose State in 2006.
Duke is averaging 104.0 points per game this season and has scored the most points (208) in the season's first two games since scoring 221 points (103 vs. East Carolina, 118 vs. Harvard) in the first two games of the 1991-92 National Championship season. Jon Scheyer scored a game-high 22 points on the night and tied his career high with four three-pointers. He finished 8-of-11 from the field, 4-of-6 from behind the arc and hit 2-of-3 from the line. He added four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Scheyer's 22 points is the ninth highest scoring performance off the bench under Coach K. A non-starter has scored 20 or more points a total of 36 times under Coach K, including twice this season. Freshman Taylor King had 20 off the bench in the season opener. King's 20 point off-the-bench performance marked the first time that has happened since March 18, 2004, when Shavlik Randolph scored 20 vs. Alabama State in the NCAA Tournament. Duke had three 20-point bench performances during the 2003-04 season.
For Scheyer, it marks the third-highest scoring output of his career and is his fourth career 20-point game. It is also his 25th career game in double figures, including both this season.
Duke now has won 53 straight non-conference home games, the longest streak in the nation. The Blue Devils have won 183 of its last 186 non-conference home games. Duke has also won 157 of its last 170 overall games in Cameron.
Duke forced its opponent into 26 turnovers for the second straight game and Duke has recorded double figures in steals for the second game this season, as well, recording 11 against N.M. State.
DeMarcus Nelson scored 14 points while shooting 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from behind the arc, and added a team-high seven rebounds vs. New Mexico State. For Nelson, it's his 45th career game scoring in double figures, including both in 2007-08.
Gerald Henderson scored 11 points, giving him nine games in his career scoring in double figures, including both in 2007-08.
Kyle Singler scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds while blocking two shots and corralling two steals for the Blue Devils. He has now reached double figures in points in both of his games as a Blue Devil.
Duke is 547-93 against unranked competition under Coach K, including a 235-23 record since 1997-98. Also since 1997-98, Duke is 117-4 at home against unranked teams.
