CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? For the 11th time in school history, the Duke Women's Golf Team claimed the Lady Tar Heel Invitational title on Sunday as the Blue Devils carded a team-best even-par, 288, to win by two strokes over second round leader Tennessee at the 6,285-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. Blue Devil junior Amanda Blumenherst turned in her second win of the season and ninth of her career with a three stroke victory.
In the team standings, Duke fired rounds of 302, 287 and 288 to finish with a 54-hole total of 877. As the round went along on Sunday, the Blue Devils were down by nine strokes as they made the turn, but Duke played the back nine holes at five-under-par to make the comeback. Tennessee finished second with an 879 followed by Georgia (885), Auburn (885) Wake Forest (886) and Vanderbilt (886). Duke won its second straight tournament after opening the season with a third place finish at the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship.
Blumenherst, who is from Scottsdale, Ariz., once again had a stellar back nine as she played the final eight holes on Sunday at three-under-par. A two-time NCAA Player of the Year, Blumenherst won the individual title by three strokes over Alina Lee of Georgia (212) with Jackqui Concolino of Vanderbilt finishing third (214). Over the three days, Blumenherst turned in rounds of 71, 68 and 70 to finish with a 209, which was seven-under-par.
She played the back nine holes at seven-under-par during the tournament. In the three tournaments so far this season, Blumenherst has registered an amazing 31-under-par ledger. Her nine tournament victories moves her within three from Duke's all-time leader Mary Anne Widman, who totaled 12 over her career.
Sophomore Alison Whitaker turned in her second straight strong round as she fired a one-under-par, 71, on Sunday to finish tied for 31st with a 224. On the final day, Whitaker notched four birdies and three bogies, but played the final nine holes at two-under-par as she posted birdies on holes 12 13 and her final hole, No. 2, since she opened her day on No. 3.
Jennifer Pandolfi, a senior from Navarre, Fla., collected an even par-72 on Sunday to conclude the weekend with rounds of 76, 74 and 72 for a total of 222, which was tied for 19th. She began her round on No. 2 and was one-over-par during her first 12 holes, but registered birdies on No. 14 and No. 15 to move to one-under-par. Pandolfi closed her day with a birdie on the first hole to fall back to even par.
Junior Jennie Lee had a wild day on Sunday as she turned in four birdies, three bogies, nine pars and two double-bogies on her way to finishing with a three-over-par, 75. In the overall individual action, Lee was tied for 19th with a 222.
After posting back-to-back rounds of 81, freshman Kim Donovan closed the weekend with a 75 to finish tied for 76 with a 237.
