CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The top-ranked Duke Women's Golf Team opened with a slow start at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Friday as the Blue Devils totaled a 14-over-par, 302, and sits tied for ninth, which is seven shots off the lead at the 6,285-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Wake Forest opened the first round with a 295 and is in first followed by Tulsa (296), Vanderbilt (297), Tennessee (297), Georgia (298), Virginia (299), Auburn (301), N.C. State (301), Duke (302) and Texas A&M (302) in the top 10. The teams going off with the Blue Devils faced an overcast first 12 holes before the rain sat in.
The round of 302 marks the second straight year the Blue Devils have opened the Lady Tar Heel with a score over 300 as in 2006 Duke turned in a 303 on day one and was in third place. Duke went on to finish third last year, six strokes off the lead. In Friday's round, it was a case of the Blue Devils not draining putts.
On Friday, junior Amanda Blumenherst led the way for the Blue Devils as she registered a one-under-par, 71, and is tied for fourth. She opened with two birdies over the first three holes and then played the final 15 holes at one-over-par.
Leading the individual action is Michaela Cavener of Tulsa (68), while Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt (70) and Angela Oh of Tennessee (70) are tied for second. Blumenherst is tied for fourth along with Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest and Emily Street of N.C. State.
Other Blue Devil scores on the day were Jennie Lee (75), Jennifer Pandolfi (76), Alison Whitaker (80) and Kim Donovan (81).
The Blue Devils have won the Tar Heel Invitational 10 times over the 30 years it has been held and had their streak of nine consecutive wins broken last year as they finished third. Duke has won the title in 1988, ?97, ?98, ?99, 2000, ?01, ?02, ?03, ?04 and ?05. Eight different Blue Devils have won the individual title over the 29 years- Mary Anne Widman (1983), Sarah LeBrun (1986), Christine Casingal (1988), Jenny Chuasiriporn (1997), Candy Hannemann (1998), Candy Hannemann and Leigh Anne Hardin (2000), Kristina Engstrom (2001), Liz Janangelo (2002) and both Janangelo and Hardin (2003).
Duke will tee off on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m., along with N.C. State and Auburn.
