CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke duo of sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang won the doubles title at the 2007 ITA Southeast Regional Championship on Monday by way of an 8-3 victory over Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Granson and Mang defeated the No. 2-ranked tandem in the country of Ani Mijacika and Federica Van Adrichem of Clemson, 8-4, in the semifinals earlier in the day.
Duke's two freshmen, Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka, will square off for the singles championship at a time and date to be determined later this week.
“It was a great weekend for our program both on and off the court,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “I was really pleased with our doubles play in winning the event but also in some of the matches that we lost. We did a great job as a team the entire weekend being a team. One of our biggest goals this fall was to re-establish a winning and supportive culture in our program and we are definitely moving in that direction. I am proud of how we handled ourselves and how we became better as a team.”
The singles finalists and doubles champions from each regional in women's action earn berths into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus from Nov. 1-4.
