PALO ALTO, CALIF.? Playing in a stellar field at the Stanford Intercollegiate this weekend, both junior Amanda Blumenherst and the Duke team maintained their leads at the 6,089-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
As a team, the Blue Devils totaled a team-best 18-hole total of 292 on Saturday and now owns a 36-hole total of 574. Duke leads by 12 strokes over Arizona State (586) with UCLA (587), Arkansas (597), California (601), Pepperdine (601), Arizona (602), Georgia (603), Washington (612), Stanford (614) and Vanderbilt (614) rounding out the top 10. The field features 11 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index to top 25 squads.
Blumenherst, who is from Scottsdale, Ariz., owns a two-day total of 139 after totaling a two-over-par, 73, on Saturday. She leads the individual action by two strokes over Arkansas' Stacy Lewis (141). Stanford's Mari Chun and New Mexico's Jodi Ewart are third (144) and four golfers, including Duke's Jennie Lee and Alison Whitaker are tied for fifth at 145.
A day after not registering a bogey over her first 18 holes, Blumenherst totaled four bogies over her first 15 holes without a birdie, but she closed with birdies on No. 16 and No. 18 to finish with a 73. The 73 was the first over-par round of the season out of 11.
Whitaker, who is a sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, totaled the only under-par round of the day as she shot a one-under-par, 70. It marked the third time this season she has posted an under-par round and Whitaker is looking for her first top 10 finish of the season. Her day featured one bogey to go along with eight pars on the front nine on her way to totaling a 36. She made the turn and registered three straight pars before collecting birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 holes. Whitaker closed with a par, bogey, birdie and a par over the final four holes.
A product of Henderson, Nev., Lee kicked off her day in birdie fashion with a four on the 501-yard, par five first hole. The rest of the day, Lee turned in six bogies and 11 pars to finish with a 76.
After shooting a 75 in round one, freshman Kim Donovan notched a 73 on Saturday and is tied for 17th with a 148. Donovan, who is from Hopkinton, Mass., totaled birdies on the par five No. 1 and No. 12 holes, but had bogies on the ninth and 11th holes to go along with a double-bogey on the 144-yard, par three eighth.
Senior Jennifer Pandolfi had an eventful day as she registered eight pars, three birdies, six bogies and one double-bogey on her way to turning in a 76. She is tied for 17th with a 148 as she enters the final round on Sunday.
Playing as an individual, freshman Rebecca Kim continued her excellent play as she fired an one-over-par,72. She is tied for 22nd with a 149. Kim, who is from Tigard, Ore., started her day on the 10th hole and opened with three pars and two bogies over her first five holes. She came back to post birdies on three straight holes before closing the first nine holes with an even-par, 36. Kim sandwiched three birdies and four pars with birdies on the No. 1 and No. 9 holes to finish off her day.
After playing holes 12-14 on Friday at eight-under-par, the Blue Devils were one-under-par on Saturday. Duke will tee off in the final round on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. (EST) along with UCLA and Arizona State.
