PALO ALTO, CALIF.? Led by an individual-best five-under-par, 66, on Friday by Amanda Blumenherst, top-ranked Duke opened the Stanford Intercollegiate with a nine stroke lead at the 6,089-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
Duke carded a two-under-par, 282, on the first day and leads UCLA (291) by nine strokes. Arizona State (293), California (296), Georgia (296), Arizona (296), Pepperdine (297), Arkansas (299), UNLV (304) and Washington State (306) rounded out the top 10 teams of a stellar field.
Blumenherst, who is a product of Scottsdale, Ariz., continued her amazing play during her junior season as she totaled five birdies and no bogies on the day. She opened the front nine with birdies on the fifth and seventh holes as the two-time National Player of the Year made the turn at two-under-par, 33. On the back, Blumenherst reeled off three straight birdies from holes 12-14 on her way to finish five-under-par.
In her 10 rounds of golf played this season, Blumenherst had collected a 36-under-par score to go along with 49 birdies and 10 rounds of even or under par. In the individual standings, Blumenherst leads the action by two strokes over Stanford's Mari Chun (68). A total of five golfers are tied for third with a 69, including Duke's Jennie Lee.
Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., fired a two-under-par ledger on Friday that was at four-under-par with only five holes remaining. The junior opened at two-under-par over the first nine holes with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. Lee totaled birdies on No. 12 and No. 13 to go to four-under-par, but bogies on No. 15 and No. 17 led to a two-under-par, 69, finish.
Senior Jennifer Pandolfi continued her excellent play with an one-over-par, 72, and is tied for 11th overall. A native of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi opened the first 10 holes at three-over-par, but she closed with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to go along with six pars to finish with a 72.
Both freshman Kim Donovan and sophomore Alison Whitaker each totaled a four-over-par, 75, and are tied for 24th. Both golfers turned in two birdies, four bogies, one double-bogey and 11 pars on the day.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Rebecca Kim is tied for 46th with a 77. In her round, Kim posted 11 pars, two birdies, two bogies, but three double-bogies hurt her round.
The Blue Devils had a field day on holes 12-14 on Friday as they played the holes at eight-under-par. Duke will tee off in round two on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. (EST) along with UCLA and Arizona State.
