MIAMI, Fla. - The seventh-ranked Duke men's tennis team began its spring season at the Miami Invitational on Saturday, totalling four singles wins and one doubles win.
The 80th-ranked player in the country, senior Joey Atas, posted a three-set win over Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas (1-6, 6-4, 6-1) to put himself in a tie for second place after day one of action at the invitational, as he was awarded eight points for a win at the No. 2 position.
Also posting singles wins for the Blue Devils were sophomore Kiril Dimitrov, who ranks 54th in the nation, junior David Goulet and senior Ned Samuelson. All three posted two-set victories on the day.
The Duke duo of freshman Dylan Arnould and senior Peter Rodrigues recorded a doubles victory, defeating Michigan's Andrew Mazlin and Ryan Heller, 8-4.
The Miami Invitational runs through Monday, Jan. 15. Sunday will see the No. 7 Blue Devils square off against No. 11 Miami in doubles and No. 32 Michigan in singles, and Monday will see Duke versus No. 12 Texas doubles and Duke versus Miami singles action.
