GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Duke women's tennis team began fall play at the Gator Fall Classic in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday as the Blue Devils lost five of six singles matches vs. host Florida and two of three doubles matches vs. South Florida in the “hidden dual” style tournament.
Senior Daniela Bercek, who received a No. 6 preseason national singles ranking last week, posted Duke's lone singles win vs. the Gators on day one of the Classic, defeating No. 81 Whitney Benik, 6-1, 7-5. It took Florida's Megan Alexander three sets to defeat Blue Devil freshman Elizabeth Plotkin, as Plotkin fought hard in her first collegiate match but eventually fell to Alexander, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Freshman Amanda Granson, senior Jennifer Zika and junior Clelia Deltour each were defeated in straight sets, as Deltour, the 76th-ranked player in the country was defeated by No. 109 and Zika was defeated by No. 111. Senior Tory Zawacki was also in action but her match ended in an injury default. Classmate Parker Goyer played one set vs. South Florida's Ashley Schumacher, winning that set 6-1.
Doubles action saw sophomores Jessi Robinson and Melissa Mang - the 46th-ranked doubles team in the nation - come away with an 8-2 victory over South Florida's Jessica Sweeting and Courtney Vernon. The 25th-ranked duo of Bercek and Plotkin fell to the No. 18 team of Gabriela Duch and Shadisha Robinson, 8-4. Senior Kristin Cargill and Goyer were also defeated, 8-6.
Over the course of the weekend student-athletes of all four participating schools - Duke, Miami, South Florida and Florida - will meet one another in doubles or singles play, per this year's “hidden dual” formatted tournament. On Saturday, the Blue Devils will take on Florida in doubles at 9 a.m. and then face Miami (Fla.) in singles.
