First off I would like to welcome everyone back, since just as we are all starting back into things I am sure that many of you are as well. This summer was quite eventful for me; I spent a lot of time here in Durham as well as taking several vacations.
Right after school ended in May a few of us decided to take a cruise together, so Emily Waner, Abby Waner, Laura Kurz and I squeezed ourselves into two cabins and cruised to the Bahamas. One of the funniest things that we did was when Laura and I went parasailing while Em and Abby went Jet Skiing on one of the islands we visited. But the fun didn't stop on the boat because when we got back from the cruise we had one extra day in Orlando.
The way flights worked out it was cheaper to fly back the next day anyway so we all unanimously decided that the day would be much better spent going to Universal Studios then lounging by the pool. So again we squeezed into a taxi and met up with one of our future teammates Krystal Thomas, who is from Orlando, to check out some of the rides and attractions.
The next day we all parted ways and while the other three went home, I (excitedly) came back to Durham for summer school. Now please do not misunderstand, I am not in remedial summer school (because that could be a common misconception since I have been here nearly every summer since arrival). Nor do I love Durham so much that I cannot afford to part with it for even a few weeks. It is the people that really do it for me all of the coaches, teammates, friends, staff, and just in general all of the people I have met since stepping on campus back in June of 2003.
So on to June I lived in an apartment with Keturah Jackson while Wanisha Smith and Chante Black stayed in an apartment pretty much next door. I kept pretty busy while taking Biology, running and lifting three days a week at 7am, and participating in an amazing internship (CAPE) at Duke Medical Center. Just as a side note my mother is a doctor and not just any doctor but trauma director at a huge hospital back home (yea she is big time) and ever since those early mornings waiting in the doctor's lounge and those dinner time conversations (that everyone has... right?) about car accidents, dog attacks, and gun shot wounds I have been fascinated by medicine.
So through this internship I got to see some of the different fields, some of the most notable days were the ones in Neurosurgery with Dr. Allan Friedman, oncology clinic with Dr. Henry Friedman, Orthopedic Surgery with Dr. Allison Toth, General Surgery with Dr. Tyler, Radiology with Dr. Nancy Major, and Surgery with Dr. D'Amico. It was a pretty amazing experience for an undergraduate to be able to learn so much in such a short period of time and much thanks to all the doctors that participated in the program.
After that first session of summer school, I decided I needed a break and went home for our annual big family get together. My grandparents own some land on a lake so it is always a great time to be able to hang out with them, as well as all my aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, and siblings. Then it was home to Beavercreek for a few days, where I got to visit with a lot of my friends from high school, one who got married this summer (congrats Emily!) and another who had a baby girl (congrats Amanda). After all this I went to New York for a few days where I got to watch the WNBA all star game and see several old teammates including Laura Kurz, Alana Beard, and Iciss Tillis as well as meet many more stars of the women's game.
After all of this it was nice to be back in Durham for a couple weeks where my entire team was here taking class and working out getting ready for the upcoming season. The last stop of this eventful summer was a trip to Italy with my family which was an amazing end to an amazing summer! So by then it was the end of August and back to Durham to watch the little “freshies” of the class of 2010 (I am getting old) wander around our “gothic wonderland” as they try to get used to college life.
P.S. Yes Dad I am shooting 3's in pick-up and yes I am calling for the ball (you know how fathers always have their input).
