DURHAM, N.C. - Duke rising sophomore Melissa Mang is set to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships as the No. 1 seed in the women's bracket, with action opening this Saturday, Aug. 12 and running through Aug. 16. For the sixth straight year, Indiana University will serve as the tournament host.
Mang is set to meet Jennifer Kelly of Cincinnati at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, with the winner of that match set to face the winner of an opening-round matchup between Sydney Murray (Columbia) and Allie Shafner (Michigan) at 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Mang was a 2006 All-ACC selection after a stellar freshman campaign helped the Blue Devils to a 20-8 overall record that included a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals for the 13th time in school history and third time in the last four years. The Metairie, La., native became the sixth player in program history and first since 2001 to receive ACC Freshman of the Year accolades in 2006, and earned a spot on the Academic All-ACC roster. The ITA National Summer Championships, presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which was played at 23 regional sites throughout the country last month. The singles and doubles champions from the ITA National Summer Championships earn wild cards into the first national tournaments of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season - the Polo Ralph Lauren Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in October. Complete championship results will be posted on www.IUHoosiers.com at the conclusion of each day. - - d u k e - - -
