Palo Alto, Calif. - Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke had their impressive run in the NCAA Doubles Championships come to an end with a loss in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at the Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, Calif.
Following an upset over the No. 1 team in the country in the first round, Atas and Stokke advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over a Florida State team that defeated them twice this season. Today they squared off against Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas of Texas Christian University. The Duke pairing took the first point of the match on serve but TCU broke serve to take a 2-1 lead. Atas and Stokke came right back to regain the lead at 3-2 but saw Abreu and Freitas take two straight points to make it 4-3. Trailing 5-3, the Blue Devils won the point to keep the set going but the Horned Frogs went on to win the first set 6-4.
Atas and Stokke also started the second set with the lead, winning the first point. The two squads battled back and forth and won the point on serve. The second set featured six ties, eventually coming down to a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was much like the rest of the set with the two teams neck-and-neck before TCU broke a 4-4 tie and scored three straight to win the match 6-4, 7-6 (4). Atas and Stokke end the season with a record of 27-13 and 13-4 mark outside of dual match play. Abreu and Freitas will move on to the semifinals where they will face third-seeded Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe of Illinois.
Duke finished the season with a 22-7 overall record and trip to the NCAA Round of 16. They won their 12th ACC Championship after rallying from a 3-0 deficit for a 4-3 victory over Virginia. Atas and Stokke advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles in the NCAA Tournament while Ludovic Walter made the round of 16 in singles. Walter, Stephen Amritraj and Peter Rodrigues were all named to the All-ACC team this season.
