PALO ALTO, Calif. ? After having the start of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships delayed one day due to rain that pushed back the team championships, a pair of Duke players advanced out of the first round at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford University Wednesday. Junior Daniela Bercek, the third seed in the individual tournament and 32nd-ranked senior Jackie Carleton will both compete in the Round of 32 Thursday at Stanford.
Carleton won an upset over No. 26 Natalie Frazier, Georgia's No. 1 player, 7-5, 6-3. Carleton, who is on the best win streak of her career with victories in her last 11 finished matches, now faces the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Kristi Miller from Georgia Tech. A fellow Atlantic Coast Conference player, Miller will be a familiar opponent that Carleton has faced twice, falling in close matches both times. In the spring 2005 dual season, Miller edged her Duke nemesis, 7-5, 7-6 (6), and at the National Indoor Championships in November, Carleton and Miller took it to three sets in the Round of 16, with Miller eventually advancing with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 score.
“I am really excited to be here,” said Carleton, “especially considering I didn't make the tournament last year. I have lost to Kristi Miller before, but the last time it was a close three-setter, so I am excited for the opportunity to face her again.”
Playing one hour after Carleton, Bercek posted an easier 6-2, 6-3, win over Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke, also a familiar opponent as the two met on one other occasion this year. Bercek also defeated Burke in the Round of 16 at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in October, 6-3, 6-1. The Duke junior, who transferred from UCLA last summer, could wind up facing one of her former teammates Thursday. Bercek plays the winner of the Alex McGoodwin (UCLA)-Meg Racette (Iowa) contest, which began at the same time as hers on Wednesday but went to three sets with Racette leading in the third.
“It might be weird,” Bercek said of facing a former teammate, “but this is NCAAs, and I am so happy to be here, and I don't care who's on the other side of the net or what color they're wearing.”
Bercek and Carleton will compete in the Round of 32 Thursday, Carleton at noon and Bercek at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. EDT). Live results are available at the following link: http://gostanford.cstv.com/livestats/tennis/StanfordTennis.html.
