After losing the doubles point to Virginia Saturday, Duke commanded an early lead Sunday with wins at all three postitions. Melissa Mang and Jennifer Zika set the tone at No. 3 with an 8-3 decision over Ashley James and Jessica Long on court three, and 17th-ranked Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson followed at No. 1, downing the 40th-ranked duo of Anat Elazari and J.J. Larson, 8-5. On court two, Kristin Cargill and Jackie Carleton produced their first win this season over a ranked doubles tandem, posting an 8-6 victory over No. 60 Inga Beerman and Abbey Walker.
Three straight Duke singles victories ensued to ensure the Duke victory. Freshman Tara Iyer made the score 2-0 with a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win over Larson at No. 3. Then at No. 4, after winning her first set, 6-3, against James, Cargill fell behind 3-4 in the second set. Three straight points, however, gave her a 6-4 edge to bring the overall score to 3-0. Zika rebounded from losing her first set at No. 6 against Walker, 6-4, and beginning down 3-0 in the secoond to win two in a row, 6-4, 6-3, clinching the Blue Devil win at 4-0.
Zika's was one of four matches that headed to third sets. Virginia Tech's Elazari snapped an eight-match win streak by No. 122 Mang, Duke's leader in singles with 20 wins this season, by topping the Blue Devil, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The point, the Hokie's first of the match, would also be their last as Bercek and Robinson won on courts one and five, respectively.
Bercek, the second-ranked singles player in the country, took the first set 6-3 but lost a 4-3 lead in the second to go down 6-4 to No. 121 Beerman. Motivated by the loss, Bercek came back out to win her third set by a 6-1 margin, improving her record against ranked players to 7-2.
Starting down a set after a 6-4 loss to Long, Robinson claimed her next two sets, 6-2, 6-1, to post her third straight singles victory.
