ORLANDO -- The No. 7 Duke women's tennis team won a convincing 7-0 match against Yale Monday in Orlando, Fla., winning at every singles position for the first time this year. The Bulldogs, coached by former Blue Devil Katie Granson, were the first unranked opponent Duke has faced in 2006. The Blue Devils are now 8-2 this season, while Yale drops to 4-4.
Duke maintained its doubles-point streak, taking the point for the 10th straight match in as many contests this season. The 53rd-ranked pair of Melissa Mang and Jennifer Zika improved to 10-1 in dual matches by deciding a quick 8-2 match over Christine Alford and Lindsey Dashiell on court three.
Yale responded with an 8-3 victory on the middle court as undefeated Rashmee Patil and Olivia Nix topped Jackie Carleton and Kristin Cargill, 8-3, making the featured court the deciding factor in the doubles point. Eleventh-ranked Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson fought a tough battle against the sister duo of Janet and Aimee Kim from Yale, finally pulling out a tiebreaking win, 9-8 (7-3).
Armed with the momentum of a close doubles call, the Blue Devils stormed out to take the next six singles matches, starting with Mang at No. 4. The freshman, who broke into the national singles rankings for the first time last week, put away Ashley Miles, 6-0, 6-3, to set the tone for Duke. Mang has the highest number of victories on the Duke team this year with a dual record of 9-1 and overall 17-8.
Cargill posted her most convincing victory of the year with a 6-0, 6-2 mark on court six against Lilian Nguyen, and No. 1 Bercek clinched the match by beating Patil, 6-2, 6-1 at the top position. Bercek, who has not fallen from Duke's top spot, is undefeated in dual matches with a record of 8-0. The junior from Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro, became the sixth Blue Devil in school history to earn a No. 1 national singles ranking last week.
After the match was clinched at 4-0, Zika topped Nix, 4-6, 6-1, (10-3) at No. 5; freshman Tara Iyer won 7-5, 6-1 over Janet Kim at No. 3; and Carleton defeated Aimee Kim, 6-4, 6-3 at the second position.
Duke plays one more match on its road trip to Florida, as the Blue Devils are set to square off against second-ranked Notre Dame Wednesday at 10 a.m.
