GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke's Mark Alarie is one of 12 former Atlantic Coast Conference Legends to be honored at the 2006 ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., from March 9-12, 2006, announced Tuesday by ACC commissioner John Swofford. Alarie and the other legends, one each from the other 11 ACC schools, will be presented to the tournament crowd at halftime of the first semifinal game on March 11.
In all the 12 players combine include seven former All-Americans, six NBA first-round draft picks and three second-round selections, two members of the ACC's 50th Anniversary Team and a total of 94 years of experience in the NBA. are represented among the 12 Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Legends announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Alarie, a pivotal member of Duke's 1986 Final Four team, earned third-team All-America honors that year and was also named to All-ACC teams in 1984, 1985 and 1986. He still ranks fifth on Duke's all-time scoring list and 21st on the all-time ACC scoring list with 2,136 career points. He helped lead the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 1984, 1985 and 1986. A first round draft pick by the Denver Nuggets, he played five seasons in the NBA, mainly with the Washington Bullets.
A classmate of current associate coach Johnny Dawkins, Alarie finished his Duke career third on the scoring chart and eighth on the rebounding chart and still ranks sixth on the scoring chart and 13th on the rebounding chart.
LEGENDS BRUNCH
The Legends will be honored at this year's ACC Men's Basketball Tournament in Greensboro at the annual ACC Basketball Legends Brunch which will be held on Saturday, March 11 beginning at 10 a.m. Hosted by television personalities Tim Brant and Mike Hogewood and former Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Cremins, the ACC Men's Basketball Legends Brunch will be held in the Coliseum Special Events Center.
