DURHAM, N.C. - Shelden Williams scored 26 points and added 11 rebounds as No. 1 Duke improved to 26-1 overall and 14-0 in the ACC, defeating Georgia Tech (10-15, 3-11) 73-66 Wednesday here at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. J.J. Redick bounced back from a sub par first half to score 16 of Duke's final 20 points in the last eight minutes to secure the victory.
Williams scored Duke's first 11 points of the second half including nine in an 11-0 run including three big dunks six minutes into the second half to tie the game at 47 all. Williams and Redick scored 34 of Duke's 39 second-half points as the Yellow Jackets managed just 27 second-half points after holding a 39-34 lead at the break.
Redick started the game shooting just 2-of-17 from the field and after missing a lay-up off a Josh McRoberts steal, he hit a floating jumper from just inside the three-point line and then added a three-pointer just before the eight minute media timeout. Redick then hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch and added a lay-up to finish with 22 points and he also finished with four assists and three steals.
McRoberts hit 5-of-7 field goals for 10 points and added five rebounds and four steals while DeMarcus Nelson provided a spark off the bench scoring 10 points and grabbing four rebounds. Greg Paulus ran the offense well with eight assists and just one turnover.
Duke clinched the ACC regular season championship out-right with the win as N.C. State sits in second place with three losses in league play. Duke will now travel to Philadelphia for a match-up with Temple on Saturday before finishing out the regular season with a road game at Florida State March 1 and senior night on March 4 against North Carolina.
