Durham, N.C. - Jonathan Stokke was named as the USTA Sportsmanship Award recipient at the USTA-ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships this past weekend.
Stokke, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., was chosen for the award by the 16 participating coaches in the tournament for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifying the spirit of college tennis during the course of the tournament and throughout his collegiate career. Current Duke assistant coach Ramsey Smith is a former recipient of the USTA Sportsmanship Award.
In the tournament, Stokke faced two nationally ranked opponents at the No. 2 position. He played well against the top-ranked player in the country, Lars Poerschke of No. 8 Baylor, in the first round but fell short 6-4, 6-7, 4-6. Stokke and the Blue Devils defeated the Bears 4-3 and then upset No. 1 Florida 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Against No. 4 Pepperdine in the semifinals, Stokke squared off against No. 100 Pedro Rico and suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 loss.
In doubles, Stokke teamed with Joey Atas and went 1-1 in the tournament. The No. 9 duo defeated Sweeting and Obradovic of Florida and then fell to Doerner and Begemann of Pepperdine in the semifinals.
Stokke and the 6-2 Blue Devils will return to action on Wednesday, March 8 when they head to Raleigh, N.C. to square off against N.C. State in their conference opener.
