With its 61-54 win over No. 22 Gonzaga, Duke improves to 11-1 on the season and is now 1-0 vs. Gonzaga after the teams' first meeting. Duke is 8-1 all-time against teams from the West Coast Conference, including a 6-0 mark under coach Mike Krzyzewski. Duke's only loss to a West Coast Conference team was a 72-68 decision against San Francisco on December 9, 1972, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Duke improves to 24-19 all-time at Madison Square Garden, including 14-5 under Coach K. Duke has won six straight in the Garden dating back to a March 2, 2003, 72-71 loss to St. John's. Duke has also won seven straight when the Garden serves as a neutral court dating back to Nov. 12, 1999, with a 71-66 loss to top-ranked UConn.
Duke improves to 148-23 under Coach K all-time in the month of December and has won 33 straight in December. The last December loss for the Blue Devils was an 84-83 decision by No. 1 Duke to No. 3 Stanford on Dec. 21, 2000. Duke is 61-3 in December since the 1996-97 season.
Sophomore Greg Paulus scored a career-high 20 points off of a 7-of-12 shooting performance, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, and 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Paulus seven field goals and 12 attempts establish new career highs while his four three pointers made and six attempted set new season highs and tie his career-best. Paulus became the second Blue Devil behind DeMarcus Nelson to reach 20 points in a game this year. Paulus also recorded three rebounds and four assists to just one turnover in 39 minutes of play. The only time he was out of the game was after he cut his chin diving onto press row. Paulus reached double-figures in scoring for the third time this season and second straight game.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts recorded 11 points and a season high 11 rebounds while adding a game-high five assists, game-high three steals and three blocks. The three steals is the second-highest mark of his career following a career-high four against Kent State Tuesday. It marks McRoberts first double-double of the season and third of his career. It is also his first double-figure rebounding game of the season and sixth of his career. For scoring, it's his seventh game in double figures this season, including his second straight, and 22nd of his career. Duke is 21-1 when McRoberts scores in double figures in his career.
Against Kent State, McRoberts became the first player in Duke history to record four or more points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in the same game. McRoberts recorded three or more in all five categories for the second-straight game. That feat (three or more) has only been accomplished by nine other players in Duke history and McRoberts joins Shane Battier as the only players to do it twice. McRoberts is just the fourth player to record a double-double while also compiling three or more assists, steals and blocks.
Freshman Jon Scheyer recorded 14 points while going 7-of-8 from the line and added four rebounds. Scheyer reached double-figures for the eighth game this season and team-leading third consecutive game. Over the past three games, he is averaging 16.0 points per game. He matched his career high with 39 minutes, just missing a complete game for the second straight game.
Sophomore David McClure was held out of the scoring column for the Blue Devils, but he finished with six rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots. He also added two assists and a steal in 27 minutes of action.
Nelson finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds. He missed scoring in double figures for just the second game this season while his nine rebounds is the second-most of the season. He played in just 26 minutes after fouling out in the second half.
Duke held Gonzaga to a season-low 54 points, 28 points under the Bull Dogs' season average. Duke has now held 10 of its 12 opponents under 56 points. Duke ranks third in the NCAA holding its opponents to 53.5 points per game.
Duke failed to record a bench point for just the 10th time in the Coach K era and the first time since Nov. 25, 2005, in a 70-67 win over Memphis. Ironically, it was Duke's last game at Madison Square Garden in the championship game of the NIT Season Tipoff.
Duke's 20 first half points marks the lowest output for Duke since scoring 18 against N.C. State on March 6, 1987, in the first round of the ACC Tournament. It ranks tied for sixth lowest under Coach K. It is just the 11th overall half under Coach K that Duke has scored 20 or fewer points. 4-for-23 16-of-21 since
Duke shot 7-of-31 from the field in the first half, the lowest first half field goal percentage under Coach K and fourth lowest on record in Duke history. It is the lowest since Duke shot 3-of-20 (.150) vs. Clemson on March 1, 1972.
