With its 61-52 over Georgetown, Duke improves to 7-1 on the season and improves its all-time record to 6-6 against the Hoyas, including 4-2 under coach Mike Krzyzewski. Duke holds a 99-41 advantage over current members of the Big East Conference, including 50-17 under Coach K.
With the win, Coach K now has 760 career victories and is now in sole possession of 10th place in NCAA history for most wins. He is third among active coaches. Ninth on the list is Arizona's Lute Olson, who with his victory over Illinois today now has 765 wins. Eighth place is Henry Iba with 767. At Duke, Coach K has 687 victories, seventh most all-time (Don Haskins, UTEP, 719).
Duke has now won 46 straight non-conference home games, the second-longest streak in Duke history and second-longest active streak in the country. Oklahoma extended its streak to 49 games after former Blue Devil Jeff Capel's club defeated TCU 63-35 earlier Saturday afternoon. Duke has also won 176 of its last 179 non-conference home games.
After posting its worst shooting percentage (.318) against Indiana at Cameron Indoor Stadium under Coach K, Duke continued to struggle and shot 8-of-28 (.286) in the first half against Georgetown. Duke rebounded to shoot 9-of-16 (.563) in the second half to shoot 17-of-44 (.386) for the game.
Georgetown's 52 points is actually a Duke opponent high at home this season. In six home games, Duke is outscoring its opponents 70.5 to 48.2. Duke has held four of its six opponents under 50 points and also held Indiana to 51 and the Hoyas to 52 tonight.
Freshman Jon Scheyer and sophomore Greg Paulus scored 20 of Duke's last 24 points over the game's final 12:36 as Duke outscored the Hoyas 24-13 in that time. In that time frame, Duke had an 8-0 run as the Blue Devils trailed 43-39 and Paulus hit a three and Scheyer scored five straight to put Duke up 47-43 over a span of 2:45, then after a 6-0 run from the Hoyas, Duke sprang on a 10-1 run over the next five minutes to go from 49-47 down to 57-49 up. Paulus scored the first six points of that run.
Junior DeMarcus Nelson scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and had a pair of steals for the Blue Devils. He scored eight of his 12 points in the first half, including Duke's first six points off a pair of three-pointers. For Nelson, it was his seventh game in double-figures this season and 22nd of his career.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists and blocked five shots. It marked McRoberts' fourth game in double figures this season and 19th of his career.
Freshman Jon Scheyer scored all nine of his points in the final 12:48 of the game, including hitting on 5-of-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
Sophomore Greg Paulus scored all of his season-high 13 points in the second half and added two key steals down the stretch for the Blue Devils. It marked Paulus' first game in double-figures this season and 12th of his career.
Saturday marked the 245th consecutive sell out at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
