Duke Nets Invitation To NCAA College Cup...
Duke will make its 13th appearance in the NCAA College Cup on Friday as the Blue Devils will face Louisvilleat 5:30 p.m. in Knoxville, Tenn., at the Regal Soccer Stadium. Hosting the four-team subregional will be Tennessee (11-6-3) and the Lady Vols will take on UAB (8-11-1) in the first round at approximately 8:00 p.m.
The winner of the match will advance to the second round to take on Tennessee/UAB winner on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
In The Rankings...
In the latest rankings, the Blue Devils,Lady Vols and Blazers are not ranked. Louisville is listed 25th in the Soccer Buzz and 22nd in the NSCAA polls.
A Look At The Opponents...
Louisville (13-4-2) received its first NCAA Tournament selection in school history after registering a school-record 13 victories this season. The Cardinals advanced to the first round of the Big East Tournament before falling to sixth-ranked West Virginia, 5-4, in penalty kicks, after was no score through 110 minutes of play.
Tennessee is coming off a 2-0 loss to Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference Tournament and is making its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA College Cup.
UAB earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Colorado College, 3-2, in the Conference USA Championship.
Duke In The NCAA Tournament...
Duke is making its 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and is coming off advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 two years ago, which marked the first time since 1996 the Blue Devils had advanced past the second round of the tournament.
In its first NCAA appearance in 1992, Duke advanced to the NCAA Championship game, but lost to North Carolina (9-1).
The Blue Devils are making their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA College Cup and have won at least one contest in the tournament each of the last six years.
The Series...
Duke and Louisville will be meeting for the first time in school history. Earlier this season, Duke knocked off UAB, 2-0, in the UAB Nike Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The Blue Devils own a 2-0 record all-time against UAB. In the series with Tennessee, Duke is tied 1-1-1.
NCAA Tournament Experience...
After going into the 2003 NCAA Tournament with only six experienced postseason players, the 2006 Duke squad boasts 17 letterwinners who have seen action in NCAA Tournament play.
Head Coach Robbie Church will be taking his fifth Duke team to the NCAA Tournament and sixth overall team to the postseason (Charlotte in 1998). In 1998, Charlotte advanced past the first round by defeating South Carolina, 2-0, but lost to North Carolina, 6-0, in the next round.
Fab Freshmen...
The freshman class that was ranked third-best in the nation has produced well so far this season scoring 10 goals and posting 11 assists, while all five have started at least one contest.
KayAnne Gummersall leads Duke with seven goals scored and 16 points as she has started six contests, while playing in all 19 games. Elisabeth Redmond has started 17 of 19 contests in both the midfield and forward positions. She has scored three goals and assisted on seven others.
Gummersall needs three more goals to tie a Duke freshman record for goals in a season (10). Redmond needs four assists to tie the Blue Devil freshman record for assists in a season (11).
Sara Murphy has started 16 of 18 matches on the defensive end, Jane Alukonis has started 14-of-19 games and CJ Ludemann has seen action in all 19 contests with one start.
Gummersall and Redmond lead Duke with three game-winning goals each.
Cohen & Hathorn Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District...
Senior Rachel-Rose Cohen and sophomore Kelly Hathorn of the Duke University Women's Soccer team were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III squad, which was selected in a vote by the College Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA).
Cohen was named to the first team and will now move on to the national ballot to be selected for Academic All-America, while Hathorn earned third team accolades.
A product of San Diego, Calif., Cohen received the honor for the second straight year and has led the Blue Devils on the defensive end all season starting 19 contests. She owns a 3.81 grade point average and is majoring in biological anthropology and anatomy.
Hathorn, who is from Durham, N.C., earned third team accolades as she owns a 3.43 grade point average. A sophomore defender, Hathorn has seen action in 17 matches, while posting 14 starts.
Four Blue Devils Earn All-ACC Honors...
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) office released the 2006 All-ACC squads with four Blue Devils earning accolades. Senior's Rebecca Moros and Darby Kroyer were named to the All-ACC first and second teams, respectively, while KayAnne Gummersall and Elisabeth Redmond each were selected to the All-Freshman team by a vote of the league head coaches.
