With its 54-51 win over Indiana, Duke improves to 6-1 on the season and improves its all-time record to 4-3 against the Hoosiers, with all seven meetings coming under coach Mike Krzyzewski. Duke holds a 57-23 advantage over current members of the Big Ten Conference, including 37-15 under Coach K.
With the win, Coach K now has 759 career victories and moves into a tie for 10th place in NCAA history. He ties Ed Diddle and is third among active coaches. At Duke, Coach K has 686 victories, seventh most all-time (Don Haskins, UTEP, 719).
Duke improves to 8-0 in ACC/Big Ten Challenges and remains the only undefeated team from either conference. Tuesday marked just Duke's second home game in the challenge as the Blue Devils defeated Indiana for the second straight season.
Duke's field goal percentage of 31.8 percent is tied for the fifth-worst shooting performance under Coach K, but Duke is 3-3 in those six games. Duke shot 16-of-51 (.313) and defeated St. John's on Feb. 26, 2005, and shot 21-of-66 (.318) against Florida State and won 72-66 on Dec. 5, 1996. Tonight and the Duke-Florida State game in 1996 mark the lowest shooting percentage under Coach K at home and Duke won both those games.
Duke's 54 points marks the lowest output in a victory in 24 years, since Duke defeated Clemson 50-44 on Jan. 23, 1982. In all, it is the 16th game under Coach K when Duke failed to score 55 points and the fifth win in such games.
Duke and Indiana's combined 105 points marks the 15th game under Coach K that a Duke team and its opponent scored 105 or fewer points. Duke is now 12-3 in those 15 games. The combined 105 points is the lowest since Duke defeated Delaware State 57-46 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on March 18, 2005.
Duke has now won 45 straight non-conference home games, the second-longest streak in Duke history and second-longest active streak in the country. Oklahoma extended its streak to 48 games after winning in former Blue Devil Jeff Capel's first couple home games as the Sooner head coach. Duke has also won 175 of its last 178 non-conference home games. Illinois held the longest streak until losing to Maryland in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge earlier Tuesday.
Indiana held a slight 36-34 rebound advantage marking the first time this season Duke has been out-rebounded in seven games this season.
Junior DeMarcus Nelson scored 13 of Duke's first 15 points en route to a game-high 19 on the night. It marked his 21st career game scoring in double figures and sixth in seven games this season. He added six rebounds, two blocks and two steals to his performance.
Freshman Jon Scheyer scored 10 points, led Duke with four assists and recorded a season/career high three steals. It marked the fifth time in seven games he's reached double figures this season.
Sophomore David McClure had another inspiring performance with six points, three rebounds, a career-high three blocks and two steals in 24 minutes of action. McClure nailed a three in a 9-3 first-half run and had a key steal and blocked shot at the end to preserve the Duke victory.
Tuesday marked the 244th consecutive sell out at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
