With its 71-56 win over Air Force, Duke became the fourth program in NCAA history to record 1,800 victories. Duke is now 1,800-811 in its 102nd season of intercollegiate competition.
Duke held Air Force to a new opponent low of 10 rebounds for the game. The Falcons didn't record their first rebound until the 7:37 mark of the first half and Air Force players totaled eight rebounds on the game. The previous Duke opponent low was 14 by N.C. State (12 from Wolfpack players) on March 8, 1968, in a 12-10 Duke loss in the ACC Tournament. (Duke has rebounding totals for 1,561 games in its history dating as far back as the 1950-51 season. Rebounding wasn't an official team NCAA statistic until 1954-55).
With the victory, the Blue Devils have now started 4-0 for the third straight season, sixth in the last seven and for the 17th time in 27 seasons under Coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Tonight was the first meeting between Duke and Air Force. Duke is now 9-4 against teams from the Mountain West, including 5-1 under Coach K and 3-1 against teams from Colorado, all under Coach K. The last game for both of those categories was a 67-57 win over Colorado State in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Duke is now 2-2 in Kansas City and 1-1 under Coach K. Duke improves to 2-1 at Municipal Auditorium and this was the first time Duke has played at Municipal Auditorium under Coach K.
Duke is now 52-17 in mid-season tournaments under Coach K, including seven straight after winning the 2005 NIT Season Tip-Off.
Duke shot 17-of-23 (.739) from the field in the first half, the eighth-highest first-half shooting percentage in Duke history and the sixth-highest under Coach K. Duke shot 16-of-22 (.727) against Columbia in the season opener and in four games, the 2006-07 team already owns two of the top 11 first half shooting percentages in school history. In four games this season, Duke is now 61-of-101 (.604) from the field in the first half.
For the game, Duke shot 25-of-41 (.610), marking the first time Duke has hit above 60 percent from the floor since Nov. 16, 2005, when it shot 35-of-55 (.636) against Seton Hall in a 93-40 win.
Duke held Air Force to zero rebounds for over 12 minutes to start the game, as the first USAFA rebound came at the 7:37 mark of the first half. For the game, Duke held the Falcons to just seven rebounds,
Junior DeMarcus Nelson set a new career high with 23 points while hitting on 7-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Nelson added six rebounds and three steals to his performance. Nelson became the first active player to record a 20 point game.
Freshman Lance Thomas scored 15 points while hitting 7-of-11 from the field and added three rebounds. Thomas hit double figures for the second time in four games this season.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts recorded nine points, six rebounds and five assists for the Blue Devils. On the young season, the versatile McRoberts is averaging 9.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 blocks per game while hitting on 15-of-23 (.652) from the field.
Sophomore Greg Paulus had eight points while hitting 2-of-3 from behind the arc and also recorded five assists for the Blue Devils. Paulus is averaging 4.7 assists per game on the season.
Freshman Jon Scheyer reached double-figures in scoring for the third time in his four career games, scoring 12 points including 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch and 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Scheyer is averaging 10.7 points per game and has hit 9-of-16 (.563) from behind the arc.
