With its 75-48 win over UNC Greensboro, Duke improves to 3-0 for the seventh straight season and 20th time under Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Duke also improves to 7-0 all-time against the Spartans and 135-24 against current teams from the Southern Conference. Duke has won 40 straight against the SoCon and Coach K's teams are 40-2 against the conference.
Duke held UNC Greensboro to just 48 points, marking the third time in three games this season Duke has held its opponent under 50 points. Since the elimination of the jump ball after made baskets in 1937-38, this season marks the third time in program history Duke has held its first three opponents under 50 points and the first time since 1940-41. Duke is now 44-0 under Coach K holding its opponents under 50 points and 102-4 since 1948-49.
Duke has now won 43 straight non-conference home games, the second-longest streak in Duke history and third longest active streak in the country. Illinois currently has the longest such streak with 48 straight including two wins so far this season while Oklahoma extended its streak to 47 games after winning in former Blue Devil Jeff Capel's first game as the Sooner head coach. Oklahoma is also in action tonight at home against Liberty, tipping off one hour after the Duke-UNC Greensboro game.
The Spartans shooting percentage of .316 (18-of-57) is actually the highest for a Duke opponent this season, while the Blue Devils have hit over 50 percent in all three games this season. Thursday was the first time, however, that Duke connected on 50 percent from the field in both halves, hitting 18-of-32 (.563) in the first half and 13-of-26 (.500) in the second. Duke is 580-72 under Coach K holding its opponents under 50 percent and 257-6 while holding opponents below 40 percent from the field.
Sophomore David McClure recorded career highs in points (11), rebounds (nine) and steals (seven) in 21 minutes of action off the bench for the Blue Devils. McClure's seven steals is tied for the fourth-highest mark in school history. Kenny Dennard holds the school record with 11 steals against Maryland on Feb. 3, 1979.
Sophomore Josh McRoberts hit all three of his field goals for six points and added career highs with seven assists and five blocked shots. It marks just the fourth time in school history a player has recorded five or more assists and blocks in the same game. McRoberts joins Mike Gminski, Danny Ferry and Shane Battier as players to accomplish the feat. McRoberts hit all of his shots in the season opener and in three games this season is connecting on 68.8 percent of his field goals (11-of-16) and is a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Duke's starting line-up included freshmen Gerald Henderson, Jon Scheyer and Lance Thomas against UNC Greensboro marking the first time since Jan. 18, 2003, against Maryland, that the Blue Devils have boasted three freshmen in the starting line-up. The starting line-up that night included freshmen Shavlik Randolph, J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams.
DeMarcus Nelson scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and had four steals against UNC Greensboro. Nelson is now the only Blue Devil to reach double-figures in points in all three games this season. A total of seven players have gone for double-figures a total of 12 times so far this season.
Freshman Brian Zoubek led Duke with 17 points and added seven rebounds, two blocks, two steals and two assists. Zoubek has now led the team in scoring in two of the three games this season.
Thursday marked the 242nd consecutive sell out at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
