With its 76-48 victory over Georgia Southern, Duke has now started 2-0 on the season seven straight years and 24 times in 27 seasons under Coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Tonight was the first meeting between Duke and Georgia Southern, but Duke has faced current members of the Southern Conference more than any other conference except the SEC. Duke has played SEC teams 171 times and Southern Conference teams 158 times and the Blue Devils now own a 134-24 record over those teams.
Duke is now 51-17 in mid-season tournaments under Coach K, including six straight after winning the 2005 NIT Season Tip-Off.
Duke started the game slowly from the field, hitting just five of its first 18 field goals and nine of its first 17 free throws. Down 20-19 at the 6:41 mark of the first half, the Blue Devils finished the half shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line to take a 38-32 halftime lead. Duke continued that momentum into the second half, shooting 14-of-24 (.583) from the field after halftime.
Duke has now won 42 straight non-conference home games, the second-longest streak in Duke history and third longest active streak in the country. Oklahoma extended its streak to 47 games after winning in former Blue Devil Jeff Capel's first game as the Sooner head coach Saturday while Illinois has a streak of 46 straight and opens play tonight.
Junior DeMarcus Nelson recorded his first career double-double by scoring 16 points, one off his career high and pulling down 10 rebounds, matching his career high. It marks his 17th career game in double figures in scoring, including both games this season, and Duke is now 15-2 in such games. It also marked his second career game with double-figures in rebounds. Nelson scored seven of the first nine points for Duke, helping them stay close early in the contest.
