DURHAM, N.C. ? Freshman Rachael Moss continued her brilliant play and junior Ali Hausfeld ran Duke's offense to perfection as the Blue Devils dismantled Virginia Tech in three games (30-20, 30-20, 30-18) Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke improves to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the ACC while the Hokies fall to 10-7 and 4-4, respectively.
Moss picked up where she left off in game four the night before, recording 10 kills and hitting .471 in the first game alone. Duke recorded 22 kills and hit .415 in the first game. Game one was tight for two-thirds of the game as Duke held a slight 20-19 lead before rattling off 10 of the game's last 11 points for a 30-20 win. Junior Jenny Shull served six straight points and Moss served the last three points of the game for the Blue Devils.
Game two was similar on the scoreboard. Duke was up 19-18 before scoring 11 of the game's final 13 points for another 30-20 win. This time it was Hausfeld and junior Carrie DeMange who did the damage from the service line. Both of the former high school teammates recorded two service aces near the end of the game to secure Duke's 2-0 advantage. Moss recorded five kills on just six attacks and DeMange also added another ace earlier in the game.
Duke came out of the gate strong in game three, as four straight service points from senior Polly Bendush gave Duke an early 9-5 lead. The Hokies played evenly with Duke for a while but when Bendush served three straight in her next rotation, it gave Duke a 19-11 advantage. Sophomore Aana Wherry then came in to serve six straight points and Duke led 24-12. The Blue Devils then scored six of the game's final 12 points to close out the match with a 30-18 game three victory.
Hausfeld was four kills short of a triple-double as the junior setter registered a match-high 44 assists, 10 digs and six kills. Moss recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs and DeMange added her ninth double-double, posting 12 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Sue Carls chipped in eight kills, senior Tealle Hunkus had seven kills and sophomore Jourdan Norman added six kills for the Blue Devils.
Shull anchored the Duke defense with a match-high 12 digs. Hunkus had 11 digs, Norman registered five blocks and Hausfeld and Carls added three blocks apiece in the win.
The Blue Devils will play three ACC contests next week, traveling to Wake Forest on Tuesday before hosting Maryland and Boston College on Thursday and Friday. All three matches are set for a 7 p.m. start.
