PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - The 25th-ranked Duke duo of senior Daniela Bercek and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin posted a win in the first round of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday to advance to the round of eight of the prestigious tournament.
Bercek and Plotkin took on the 28th-ranked team of Sylvnia Kosakowski and Bianca Dulgheru of Pepperdine, and came away with an 8-4 victory. The two are set to meet No. 1-ranked Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long of North Carolina on Friday.
The duo dominated the doubles qualifying bracket earlier this week, picking up wins over three nationally ranked teams on their way to qualifying for the main draw of the All-American Championships. Bercek and Plotkin posted one win on Tuesday, defeating the 23rd-ranked team of Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks of Long Beach State (8-3), and then recorded two wins on Wednesday to secure a spot in the main draw bracket. The 38th-ranked team of Diana Srebovic and Lolita Frangulyan of Florida (8-6) and 45th-ranked Anna Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem of UCLA (8-2) both fell victim to the Blue Devil tandem.
Sixth-ranked Bercek was set to compete in the main draw of singles competition at the All-American Championships, but an injury is permitting her to only compete with Plotkin in doubles play.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., is the first of three Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2006-07 season, along with the November 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the year-end NCAA Championships.
