DURHAM, N.C. ? The 23rd-ranked Duke Women's Soccer Team will close out the regular season this weekend as the Blue Devils travel to Miami on Friday, Oct. 27 and Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 29. Duke will head to Coral Gables, Fla., on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. contest and then will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday for a 6:00 p.m. match.
Duke enters the weekend with an 8-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record. The Blue Devils are coming off a 3-1 victory over third-ranked Florida State on Oct. 22, which marked senior day for nine Duke seniors. Miami owns an 8-8-1, 1-7-1 record, while Wake Forest is 12-4-0, 5-3-0.
In the ACC standings, Duke is currently tied for sixth along with Virginia, but the Blue Devils could finish as high as second with two wins this weekend along with other help. Miami is 11th and Wake Forest is fourth in the standings.
The Blue Devils and Hurricanes have met only two times in school history with Duke winning both contests. Last year, Duke won 3-1 in Durham, N.C. and in 2004 the Blue Devils pulled out a 4-1 win at Miami. In each of the last two years, senior Sarah McCabe has scored a goal against the Hurricanes.
Sunday's contest against Wake Forest is a makeup match that was originally scheduled for Oct. 11. On this date, the two squads played 52 minutes and 49 seconds before a lightning delay occurred with the Blue Devils leading, 1-0. After a delay for one hour and 10 minutes, a Demon Deacon administrator decided the game will be postponed due more inclement weather approaching. In the contest, freshman Sara Murphy had scored the lone goal in the match in the 48:18 mark.
In the series with Wake Forest, Duke owns an 11-3-1 lead and has won the past eight straight contests. The Blue Devils have not allowed a goal against the Demon Deacons since 2002 outscoring WFU, 9-0, during the stretch. Last season, Duke won 3-0 in Durham, N.C. In matches played in Winston-Salem, N.C., the Blue Devils own a record of 3-2-1.
Wake Forest is ranked 13th in the Soccer Buzz, 16th by Soccer America and SoccerTimes.com and 20th in the NSCAA polls. The Blue Devils are listed 23rd in the SoccerTimes.com national rankings.
After Duke closes the regular season this weekend, the Blue Devils will play in the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the SAS Soccer Complex. The bracket will be released on Monday, Oct. 30.
